History

Midway United Methodist Church has a rich heritage. In the mid-1800's, the first congregation came together and built a small, wood-frame church. In April of 1920 a tornado destroyed the little church. Undaunted, the congregation came together to rebuild it. Slowly, carefully, with infinite faith, they created one of the most beautiful chapels in the South. In the early 1950's, with Rev. Luther Cooper as pastor, the first educational building was constructed to provide much needed space for a Fellowship Hall and growing Sunday School Classes.

In November, 1967, ground was broken for a Parsonage while Rev. Hugh S. Page was Pastor. The Parsonage was built, paid for, furnished, and dedicated in May of 1968. The corner of Highway 9 and Campground Road soon became very busy. In order to provide a safer home, this Parsonage was sold in August of 1989 and a new one purchased in the Calamar Subdivision. A few years later, during the ministry of Rev. Mike Cash, the church began to grow and the need to build a new Sanctuary and Education Building was the challenge. Even with two worship services, the church was bursting at the seams. There was limited seating for just over 100 in the sanctuary and parking was inadequate. In 1992, under the leadership of Rev. Charles Robinson, Midway was able to purchase five additional acres of adjoining land. A 14,500 square foot building was constructed with eleven classrooms, a kitchen, and a sanctuary that could seat over 300 worshippers. In order to better serve our diverse community, Midway added a third Sunday worship service in 1996.

In 1999 Midway United Methodist Church reached another milestone in our growth with the addition of our Family Life Center. The first floor of the Family Life Center includes a full-size basketball court where we share the love of Jesus during our Upward Basketball Program, and Men's Basketball. There is a spacious fellowship hall with an adjoining kitchen where we have our regular Wednesday evening dinners. Additional classrooms and offices have allowed us to expand our successful Preschool and After School programs. The top floor includes six classrooms that enhance our growing Adult Sunday School program in addition to our combination library and history center. Two larger rooms are dedicated especially for our youth group. We are excited and anticipate much additional growth for Midway under the guidance of our new pastor, Rev. Calvin Haney.
